Avoca, PA - A groundbreaking ceremony was held today at the
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport for the New South General Aviation
Work is expected to be completed on the project October 2011,
and a contract has been awarded to Popple Construction of Laflin, PA.
Ninety-five percent of the nearly $5.2 million project is being funded by the
Federal Aviation Administration, while 2.5 percent comes from the Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation, Bureau of Aviation. The remaining 2.5 percent is
funded by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport.
This project will construct a new 440’ x 300’ bituminous
concrete apron with approximately 300’ of taxi-lane connecting the apron to the
existing general aviation apron and Taxiway A. On the landside, 1,100
linear feet of road will be constructed to the South of the apron to provide
access for vehicles.
With the anticipated design and construction of an extension
to Hangar Road, later this year, the 400’ of new hangar frontage provided with
the project will be build-ready, allowing for the addition of more than 60,000
sq. ft. of hangar space.
URS Corporation, Hunt Valley, MD, provided
design services for the project and will provide construction inspection.
