|ADA Services & Accessibility|
At the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, we recognize that air travel can become a stressful experience when a traveler is not a frequent flyer nor familiar with flying.
In an effort to meet the needs of all our passengers, we are working to improve access for special needs travelers whenever improvements are planned for the Airport. Some of the services AVP currently provides include:
AVP Information Center
The Information Center is located near the middle entrances on the first level of the Terminal Building.
Airport Ambassadors are available to assist travelers with questions or concerns regarding ground transportation, baggage issues, airline services, concession inquiries, special needs and TDD services.
When the word accessible is used, it means that the item conforms to State and Federal codes.
For those using wheelchairs, AVP offers specially designed ramps, curbs, doors and elevators. Located on all three levels of the Terminal Building are signs that feature Braille to assist the visually impaired. In addition, seeing-eye dogs are permitted in the Terminal Building and on aircraft (please check with your airline).
Airline ticketing and baggage claim are also accessible. Upon prior request, airlines offer special escort and transport services with wheelchair assistance provided from the curb to the security checkpoint.
Terminal Facilities & Services
On Terminal levels 1 and 2, AVP offers many facilities and services to its passengers to make traveling as pleasant an experience as possible.
On the first level, AVP offers airline and rental car ticket counters, and a commuter boarding lounge. The second level offers Wings Restaurant and Bar, Northeast PA News & Gift, and Destinations Arcade. The second level also houses administrative offices, the Pocono Club and Business Center, a Meditation Room, and a jet boarding lounge. Both levels are accessible using a wheelchair and passengers may be met at the gates through the security checkpoint.
AVP offers designated handicap parking spaces for your convenience, in both the garage and public parking lot.
In order to assist persons with disabilities or medical concerns, the Transportation Security Administration has developed guidelines with input from various groups.
Medical Aid Facilities
Accessible restrooms are available on levels 1 and 2 of the Terminal Building in addition to both Boarding Lounges beyond the security checkpoint.
Accessible drinking fountains are available on levels 1 & 2 of the Terminal Building.
Baggage Check-In & Claim
All airline ticket counters offer ample room for baggage check-in. Baggage claim is located near the rental car ticket counters and is accessible for the physically disabled.
Jetways are located on the second level of the Terminal Building. They are accessible for the physically disabled to board a jet aircraft.
Accessible elevators are located in several areas in the Terminal Building. Airline personnel can operate an elevator for passengers that require a wheelchair to gain access to the Security Checkpoint.
Level Entry Boarding Ramps
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport offers two commuter gates that have level entry access for commuter aircraft passengers. They are located on the first level of the Terminal Building.
Passenger Access Lift (PAL)
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport owns an operational Passenger Access Lift (PAL) used for assisting individuals with physical disabilities on and off of a commuter aircraft. Though it is the responsibility of AVP to provide the equipment, it is determined by the airline whether or not to offer and use the equipment. It is recommended that passengers requiring this service first discuss its availability with their airline representative.
Signs indicating the locations of specific facilities and services are located throughout the Joseph M. McDade Terminal Building at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport.
Carriers must ensure that individuals with disabilities (including hearing and vision impairments) have timely access to the same information provided to other passengers which includes, but is not limited to, the following:
